Avian Malaria
This is a protozoal disease caused by blood parasites from the genus Plasmodium. This disease is commonly talked about in the Philippine gamebird industry.
The common symptoms will be weakness, depression, birds become thin and very pale or anemic. The protozoa feeds on the red blood cells and eventually destroys it resulting in anemia. Take note that some birds may be infected but will not show any apparent symptoms.
Usually it is not fatal unless there is a very high challenge which can lead to coma and death. The best way to prevent the disease is to protect the birds from mosquitoes which transmit the blood parasite. Although, the way we raise our roosters makes this preventive measure impossible.
Diagnosis is confirmed thru the identification of the blood parasite in a blood smear viewed under a microscope.
This is commonly treated using sulfonamides combined with trimethoprim. If you suspect that your flock is infected by this disease, please seek a veterinarian and don't self medicate.
