Aflatoxin
Aspergillus molds are responsible for the production of aflatoxins. These molds can naturally grow in the soil, decaying vegetation, cereal grains like corn, soya and wheat which are commonly used as feed ingredients.
High temperate and high humidity which is exactly the situation in the Philippines are the ideal situation needed for the growth and proliferation of aspergillus molds.
Mycotoxicoses, the condition of mycotoxin poisoning, highly affects the liver and ingestion of high level of aflatoxins will result to liver cirrhosis that may lead to the death of the animal. Mild exposure will cause poor weight gain and poor feed efficiency thus causing stunting and unthriftiness of our chickens.
These type of mycotoxins call also affect reproductive system of our breeder flock.
Another very dangerous effect is the suppression of our chicken's immune system thereby making them more prone to disease. Long term exposure can even cause cancer.
Even if the companies producing the feed we use have quality assurance measures to make sure that the raw materials used are with in the allowable limits. We must learn to store the feed we buy properly. Sacks of feed should be placed on a palette and not allowed to be placed directly on the ground. It is best also to keep at least one foot clearance of our feed from the wall of our storage rooms. See to it that there is no possibility of the feed to get wet. This is an important management practice that is not always seen in the farms and even in the poultry supply stores where we buy our feeds. Hopefully reading this article will correct the way we store the feeds we buy.
