Infectious Coryza

Infectious Coryza is a very common disease that infects our gamebirds. This can be seen as early as about 1 month old and can continually infect older birds in the cord area. The disease is caused by the bacteria Haemophilus paragallinarum.

The common symptoms are discharges that contain pus from the eyes and nose. Facial swelling, swelling of the wattles, sneezing and difficulty in breathing. Most of the time the infection is complicated with the E. coli bacteria and this causes the infection to have a foul odor. This disease should be differentiated from NCD, CRD, IB and ILT.

Being caused by a bacteria, affected birds can be treated with anitbiotics like Tylosin, Erythromycin and Flouroquinolones among many others that are also effective. But the best thing to do is prevent the disease by vaccinating the birds and having a good biosecurity program. Vaccines are usually given at about 28 to 35 days and repeated at least once at the age of about 63 days. When you buy your Coryza vaccine, see to it that it is trivalent or protects against the 3 strains of coryza bacteria. It should contain all 3 serovars A, B & C. Please follow the instructions and dosage of the vaccine you are using. It will be best to consult your veterinarian before administering the vaccine.

Allow me to share the vaccine I am using, it is a very safe and effective tri valent vaccine that is in an aqueous saponin suspension that is why it is not highly stressful and does not cause severe swelling to the injection site when administered. The vaccine is Nobilis Coryza from Intervet. You can get the vaccine from Kaagpas whose banner ad is on our page.
